Once upon a time, in a quiet village nestled among rolling hills, two inseparable boyhood friends, Liam and Eamon, formed an unbreakable bond. They spent their days exploring the forests, sharing dreams, and envisioning a future full of adventures. As they grew, life took them down different paths.

Liam’s heart was drawn to the serenity of the monastery atop the highest hill. He felt a profound connection with spirituality and chose the path of a humble monk. Spending his days in quiet contemplation, he found solace in the simple pleasures of life — the rustling of leaves, the sound of flowing water, and the warmth of the sun on his face. His robes were tattered, but his heart was rich with wisdom.

On the other hand, Eamon's ambitions led him to the bustling capital city. Through hard work and determination, he climbed the political ladder, becoming a close advisor to the king. Adorned in opulent robes and surrounded by luxury, he had everything he ever wanted. However, his heart felt a void, a distant echo of the laughter and camaraderie he once shared with Liam.

Years later, destiny conspired to bring them face to face once again. Eamon, now a portly minister, recognized the shabby monk by the roadside. Compassion welled up within him as he looked at Liam’s thin frame and humble attire. Unable to ignore his feelings, Eamon approached Liam with a heart full of concern and he said ;

"You know, if you could learn to cater to the king, you wouldn't have to live on rice and beans," Eamon said, his voice tinged with genuine care.

Liam looked into Eamon’s eyes, a gentle smile on his lips. "If you could learn to live on rice and beans, you wouldn’t have to cater to the king," he replied, his words carrying a wisdom borne of experience.

In that moment, a flood of memories rushed back to them — the laughter, the dreams, and the unbreakable bond they had shared. As they caught up, Eamon realized the hollowness of his material success, while Liam acknowledged the richness of his spiritual journey.

And so, the two friends, once so intertwined, stood at crossroads — one with worldly wealth and power, the other with spiritual depth and inner peace. Their paths had diverged, but they had both learned valuable lessons.

As this tale reminds us, life offers a spectrum of experiences. It's easy to get lost in the pursuit of external success, but true fulfillment often lies in embracing simplicity, cultivating inner richness, and cherishing the relationships that truly matter. In a world that encourages us to chase after more, this story encourages us to find contentment in less and discover the treasures of a heart at peace.

Key takeaways

Most of us fall somewhere between the two. As for me, it is better to be closer to the monk.

What is your choice ;

Do you prefer being closer to the monk ?

or

to the minister ?
